The degree of substitution is the fundamental chemical parameter determining the water solubility, acid and salt resistance, and transparency of CMC. It represents the average number of hydroxyl groups replaced by carboxymethyl groups within each glucose unit of the CMC molecular chain, typically ranging from 0.4 to 1.5. The two primary indicators for carboxymethyl cellulose are the degree of polymerization (n) and the degree of etherification (α). As the degree of substitution increases, solubility improves, and the transparency and stability of the solution are enhanced.
