Povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP) is a widely used excipient in preparing solid dosage forms. It is employed as a suspending and dispersing agent and as a tablet binding, granulating and coating agent. Povidone is a synthetic polymer consisting essentially of linear 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone groups, the degree of polymerisation which results in polymers of various molecular weights. Different types
of povidone are characterized by their viscosity in aqueous
solution, relative to that of water, expressed as a K-value
[15,26,31]. Soluble Povidone K-30 is used as a binder in wet granulation and in direct compression applications. In wet granulation, K-30 generally gives hard and compact granules with good flow properties. The substance can be used for direct compression as
a binder and can also slow the drug release.
